F.A.Q.

Q. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR A CUSTOMER LOOKING TO HIRE A PROVIDER LIKE YOU?

A. Know what you want up front. Have a realistic budget. Form your opinions from qualified references and face to face meetings, NOT browsing through fancy websites (ANYONE can have a fancy website!). A company with a strong book of maintenance business is more likely to be around for many years! Maintenance is recurring work which keeps full service companies in business in good times and bad!

Q. WHY DOES YOUR WORK STAND OUT FROM OTHERS WHO DO WHAT YOU DO?

A. We give top quality value for a fair price. With 39 years of experience, we have seen and done almost anything related to landscaping and outdoor maintenance projects. We are not “reaching for the brass ring” on every job. Our goal is to create long lasting realtionships built on value and trust. The majority of our accounts have been on our books for over 15 years, without benefit of any more than a hand shake agreement.  We are family owned and operated, and you are usually dealing with someone who can make immediate decisions.

Q. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?

A. The incredible experieince of meeting so many different people, all of whom have different needs and ideas! We are good at creating privacy and comfortable landscapes that people genuinely enjoy! Everyday we are doing something different. The book of business we have developed over the years is very solid, quantifiable work for people that truly appreciate what we do for them.

Q. WHAT QUESTIONS DO CUSTOMERS MOST COMMONLY ASK YOU? WHAT’S YOUR ANSWER?

  Q. Do you give free estimates?

 A. No–the truth is nobody does! Someplace, somehow, you will be paying for this professional time. Your lawyer, doctor, plumber, locksmith, etc ALL charge for everything they do, including trip charges, phones, copying, pictures, etc. We would rather be straight up front with you, rather than hiding charges in mulching, or other time consuming projects.

Q. Do you really need (6) six applications of fertilizer?

A. Ordinalirly –no no no! Our progarms are designed for what YOUR lawn needs, when it needs it. We do not believe that”one size fits all” works very well for fertilizing and herbicide programs.

Q. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE STORY FROM YOUR WORK?

A. Yes I do! We were once invited to do some consulting at a new home construction. The owner had talked with several other contractors, and one had left a brochure showing several of HIS projects. In the small world of things, several of his alleged projects were actually the work of my own crew. I was able to give exact addresses for several of the pictures! We were hired, and now, 12 years later we are still working for this client.

Q.WHAT DO YOU WISH CUSTOMERS KNEW ABOUT YOU OR YOUR PROFESSION?

A.The “neighborhood boy” is long gone. Today, professional service providers are licensed, insured, well trained, operate their businesses in a legally zoned areas, and comply with a myraid of Federal and State laws, rules and requirements.

Q. HOW DID YOU DECIDE TO GET IN YOUR LINE OF WORK?

A. I actually got started, as most people do, on a part time basis while working at an insurance company and attending college in the early 70′s. The more I was inside..the more I wanted out! The instant gratification of doing good work became habit forming. It’s no longer a job …it’s a way of life.

 Q. WHAT ARE YOUR MOST COMMON TYPES OF JOBS?

A.We are servicing 145 properties on a regualr basis, and just about everything we do revolves around our mowing and trimming accounts. Roughly 95% of what we do is based around our existing book of business, and the other 5% is referral and new business. Our resdiential book of business primarily consisits of professional people that have no interest or desire to do anything outside except enjoy their landscape!

Q. DO YOU DO ANY SORT OF CONTINUING EDUCATION TO STAY UP ON THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS IN YOUR FIELD?

A. All of us in this industry that apply fertilizers  and weed control are required to accumulate CCH hours on a regular basis for renewal. We also attend various trade shows, manufacturer schools and other professional seminars relating to horticulture practices, business, customer relations and so forth.

Q. DESCRIBE YOUR MOST RECENT PROJECT, WHAT IT INVOLVED, HOW MUCH IT COST, AND HOW LONG IT TOOK?

A. In historic Irvington, as part of total renovation project, we re-graded and installed a new aggregate driveway, made a new parking area, corrected drainage issues, created several new beds, installed a new lawn. The total cost was modestly only in the $ 10,000 range. Several contractors turned the job down due to its location and realitively small size. We LOVE these small jobs.

Q. DO YOU HAVE A COMPLICATED PRICING SYSTEM FOR YOUR SERVICES?  PLEASE GIVE ALL THE DETAILS HERE.

A. There’s no complicated pricing. The truth is, all we have to sell is time, and it makes no difference in what we are doing! We only have just so many hours a year to cover all of our overhead! Our hourly and flat charges are reasonably consistent, and do take into account special equipment or skill needs. Our rates are the same regardless of where you live!

Q. IF YOU WERE ADVISING SOMEONE WHO WANTED TO GET INTO YOUR PROFESSION, WHAT WOULD YOU SUGGEST?

A. As we also own a large equipment sales and service facility, we are in this position often! www.re-power.com My immediate best advice is for you to go to work for another established company for at least two full seasons (and maybe do some work on the side so you get an idea of the long days you will be enduring as self employed). This will give you invaluable insight as to procedures, equipment, timing, practical knowlege, etc. You can’t just grab a paint brush and be a professional painter, or buy a basketball and be an immediate star! You need to invest in some learning time!
